Meet The Maker: Dr. Cicely Scheiner
Dr. Cicely Scheiner is the multi-faceted creator of Shiny Co., under which she produces our absolute favorite cleaning products. Cicely is a Florida native, but grew up in the mountains of Colorado. Now, back in Florida, she works as a gifted educator and offers her talents as a trusted Tarot reader and yoga instructor. Shiny Spray started as a personal kitchen experiment to create a non-toxic all purpose cleaner for her home. After giving some samples to her friends to try out, it quickly gained a cult following and became a frequently requested household staple in many homes. We are Shiny Spray’s biggest fans and clean our entire lives with it. Her interesting scent combinations are truly wonderful, I’m talking spa quality, but the best thing about Shiny Spray is its effectiveness. It works and we trust its safe formula around our pets and families. This is the BEST all purpose cleaner we have ever tried and we’re confident that you will think so too.
What led you to creating Shiny Spray?
It was 2020 and cleaning products were hard to come by, so I started making my own, and some for my friends, and people loved it, so I started making more, and offering a variety of scents.
How has your community in Orlando supported you or given you inspiration?
Because I started making shiny spray with my friends in mind, I have been inspired by their requests for scents and design in packaging. Orlando has been the best place for me to get shiny spray off the ground because people here care a lot about sustainability, scentsibility, and design–three things that I instill into my work as a maker.
What do you like most about making Shiny Spray?
I am extremely picky when it comes to scents. I don’t like anything that smells chemically, or fake, or overwhelming. So what I like best about making shiny spray is that I use all natural ingredients, it's scented using essential oils so it doesn’t have that perfumy chemical smell that can give you headaches or make you queasy.
Do you have a dream project that you would like to realize someday?
I’d really like to get to the point where shiny spray refills come in compostable, lightweight materials. Glass is great, but it’s heavy.
How do you come up with your scents and do you have a favorite?
I just think of what might smell good together. I try things out, there have been some stinky mistakes, but I like to experiment. Patchouli & Bergamot is my favorite.
What keeps you busy when you’re not creating your Shiny Spray or new Yoga Mat Cleaner?
I am a school teacher, yoga teacher, tarot reader, home cook, sewist, cat mom, beginning cellist, nature enthusiast…you name it, I try it. Some things I am better at than others.
What have you learned about yourself from building your product line and brand?
It’s easy to have an idea, and very hard to do the work to make it happen.
And now for the rapid fire round...Dogs or Cats?
Both!
Random fun fact about yourself?
I like to gamble.
Lastly, What does the word “veer” mean to you?
To (as Robert Frost wrote) take the road less traveled.
