Meet The Maker: Kathryn Tosh

Tell us a little about Tosh Spice. What do you make? What led you to creating your products?
Tosh Spice is a line of toxin free fragrance and skin care products. Skin problems led me to discovering how most of the products I was using had chemicals that I was having reactions to. I started making my own skin care products and really enjoyed the aromas of some of the natural ingredients I was using. I began to experiment blending my own fragrances and soon I had friends requesting what I was wearing.

We have been obsessed with your roll-on fragrances for some time now. #9 is my personal favorite. What’s yours?
The Florida AF is the one I made for myself. I love when the magnolia trees are blooming in Florida and I wanted to be able to hold on to that smell year round.

What inspires you in your day to day?
For one, I’ve noticed I am very sensitive to my surroundings. Tiny details can either bring me lots of joy or drive me crazy. I see lines in just about everything. It probably comes from ballet, where I’m making specific lines with my body all day. So when I see pleasing shapes or geometric figures or things placed/grouped together, that feeds my brain in a good way. I guess the short and cringey answer is aesthetics. I am also inspired by people who give a shit about the planet we live on. And the folks fighting the patriarchy!
What other hobbies or interests or day jobs keep you busy?
Ballet is the job that takes up most of my day and I teach private Pilates lessons during the bookend hours of my work day. Usually after that I cook dinner, rehab my body, and try to get a little time on the couch to watch TV and snuggle with my boyfriend and my cat. Boring! But I love my home and I do try to go out for a nice dinner and drinks when I can. Oh, and I write screenplays with my older brother!

Are there any artistic mediums that you have not worked with but would like to try?
I’ve dabbled in a few things. Painting, filmmaking, music, collage. But, I think I tend to have a personality that gets impatient if I’m not immediately good at something and I also enjoy making a mess. If I had a designated room where I could just shut the door and not look at the mess I created I might be more inclined to dabble some more, but if it’s not something that I can pack up and clean up at the end of the day I likely won’t even endeavor.

Do you have a dream project that you would like to realize someday?
Yes, but I’ll be damned if I don’t make it come to fruition so I’m not going to say much about it!
How has your community in Orlando supported you or given you inspiration?
In just about every way.

Speed Round: Dogs or Cats? Share a random fact about yourself? Don't think too hard...GO!
Meow. Boiled peanuts are my second favorite food.

What does the word “veer” mean to you?
I’m a Gemini so it does speak to me. Geminis are naturally very curious people and like to be learning constantly, so to me to veer is to go check out that thing over there, even if I have a handful of things going on over here.
