Meet The Maker: Olivia Manzone
I met Olivia at a local art market here in Orlando. My friend was instantly drawn to the crocheted frog-eyeball headband she was wearing, and while she was buying one for herself, I spotted Olivia’s crocheted opossums and knew we had to carry them at Veer. That was years ago, and we’ve sold a whole lot of those little marsupials since. I figured it’s about damn time I introduce you to their maker.
P.S. We grabbed lunch after that market—my friend proudly wearing her new frog-eyeball headband and the poor server absolutely could not look her in the eye...any of her eyes. Anyway! Back to Olivia.

Are you a native Floridian? Where did you grow up?
Yes! I am a native Floridian, I am originally from Ocala, FL. I moved to the Orlando area with my mom when I was a teen.
Tell us a little about Olivia’s Oddities. What led you to explore crochet?
Olivia’s Oddities was born out of my love of sharing my art with others and being involved in the community. I make crochet plushes along with wearable accessories. I was taught how to crochet by my mom several years ago and I fell in love with the craft.
What do you like most about what you do?
I really like bringing joy and whimsy to people. It makes me happy to see the smiles on people’s faces when they see one of my crochet plushies. I also really love getting to bring so many different ideas to life!

How many hours a week do you spend creating? How would you describe your work style?
I’d say I spend about 12 hours a week creating after my full time job. I’d say my work style is chaotic but organized. It’s messy, but I still know where everything is.
Do you have a favorite thing to make?
I really enjoy making opossums! I love how unique each one I make is.

What inspires you in your day to day?
I am really inspired by other artists and nature mostly! If I’m ever feeling lost on what to create, I usually go on a hike or visit an art market as a guest.
What other hobbies, interests or day jobs keep you busy when you’re not crocheting?
I am a middle school art teacher, so that takes up most of my day! Other than that, I love hanging out with my partner and pets while crocheting on the couch. I also love birdwatching and hiking.

Are there any artistic mediums that you have not worked with but would like to try and why?
I would love to try quilting! It always looks so cool and beautiful to me.
What have you learned about yourself from creating your brand?
I have learned that it takes a lot of work! A lot of self promotion, as you are your main cheerleader. I also feel like it has led me to learn more about myself and what I want out of my business and art.

How has your community in Orlando supported you or given you inspiration?
All of the markets I have done and opportunities I have been given have been great support! Nothing makes me feel truly validated as an artist than when I participate in the local Orlando art scene.

Dogs or cats? There are no wrong answers here...
Both!
Random fact about yourself?
I volunteer with a local bird rescue!
What does the word “veer” mean to you?
I’d say veer means to shift mindsets when faced with a challenge. I see it as a way to help guide yourself through tough times.
